The Skinny Author’s Book Review

Wyoming to Mississippi

These four authors are shining brightly this week. Pamela F. Hutchins is an employment attorney who loves to ride her horses in Wyoming. You’ll be able to meet Candace Carrabus and S.F. Benson at PennedCon in St. Louis next week. And S.J. Francis continues her work as a professor in Mississippi.

 Bombshell by Pamela Fagan Hutchins

Blurb: Bombshell (What Doesn’t Kill You #9)

Temp worker by day, lounge singer by night, single mom Ava is having a hard time breaking up with her long-distance boyfriend and making it without the support of her parents on the island of St. Marcos. Things improve dramatically when she lands a too-good-to-be-true job at a virtual currency exchange, where she meets a seriously sexy man, and goes to work for a boss so incredible he sponsors her on a trip to New York to record a demo. But when Ava stumbles across the raped and murdered body of a young woman, she recognizes her from a shared trauma back in their school days. Ava is devastated and throws herself into avenging the girl’s death. From that moment on, it’s one bombshell after another, going off closer and closer to Ava and the people she cares about most.

The most recent review of Bombshell.

From the first book she was in, I have loved the character of Ava. I love that she’s fleshed out into her own story and if you’ve read any of this author’s books, you’re going to love this one, too! Ava is amazing

On the Buckle by Candace Carrabus

Blurb: On the Buckle

Smart-mouthed jumper rider Viola Parker can barely keep her horse in hay let alone support her whipped-cream-in-a-can addiction. Now, all that’s between her and a surprise trust fund is keeping a job for one full year by the time she’s 30. And a glowing letter of recommendation. It’s supposed to be a relaxing–boring!–year of riding “on the buckle.” But between the ghost horse visiting Vi’s dreams and the dead bodies piling up, the question isn’t whether she can keep her mouth shut long enough to earn a reference, but whether she’ll live long enough to get it.

It was amazing

What a great next in series and my favorite of the two so far! I loved Cash’s story and the combination of old and new characters melded well while maintaining a level of familiarity and connection within the series. I felt this book had a little more depth and complexity than the first one and loved all the challenges Cash and Qadira faced. I am so excited for this series and can’t wait to see who’s story is next!

Shattered Lives by S.J. Francis

Blurb: Shattered Lives

She wants to know the truth, but some secrets might be better left alone…

Kate Thayer has a good life as a veterinarian, running the family horse farm–until she uncovers an act of unimaginable treachery by those she trusted most and learns that everything she knew about herself was a lie. Her paternal grandmother, the woman who raised her, is behind a number of devastating secrets Kate is compelled to discover. But the deeper she digs, the more betrayal she finds, changing her life in ways she could have never foreseen. https://www.sjfranciswriter.com/Elsa’s Reviews > Shattered Lies

5 Stars It’s Amazing.

I was horrified when I started reading Shattered Lies, as racial tensions are a big issue in South Africa currently, and I could not figure out if this story was taking place in the 60’s or now. I’m very glad I did not stop reading, because as it unfolded, I was hooked.

It’s all here – the pretending of being nonracial by both black and white grandmothers, the ugly lies and betrayals that only families seem to inflict on each other. If it came from a stranger it would probably not be a betrayal…or be so devastating. And then, to find out that the lies and deception go deeper than race, that it involved people this young woman had believed to be honest for 30 odd years, was a good twist.
