Question the Enigma Cookies

What kind of things can you do to make your characters more appealing and life-like? Most of the characters we fall in love with start out as every day people. But there is always something we can draw upon to make them resonate with the reader. Tessa Scott in An Unlikely Hero is a mother of three. She’s known for her chocolate chip cookies at church, PTA and anyone who needed cheering up.

When the Libyan terrorist broke into her house in Grass Valley she was making cookies. Of course they caught on fire and did a lot of smoke damage to her house, but not before Tessa banged the terrorist over the head with a rolling pin. Her future boss is going to get really tired of her trying to sugar coat his agents with the goodies she brings from home. I think she just might have to add something lethal to protect the team from those who harbor sinister plans.
In the meantime here is her recipe for her delicious Enigma Cookies. They’re not just for federal agents. Be sure to read the whole thing. That’s an order.
ENIGMA CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES
Warning: Use only Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Chips (Otherwise you’re tempting fate.) 1 pkg.
2 large eggs
2 softened sticks of butter (You heard me! Butter!)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
3 cups all purpose flour (You can throw the flour on the floor if there is an intruder. Very slick.)
1 cup chopped pecans (To leave them out would be like forgetting your bullet proof vest in Kandahar!)
Preheat over to 375 degrees. Mix everything together except for the pecans and Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate. Save those for last. Be sure to sample one of the milk chocolate chips…just do it. After adding those last two items and stirring until completely smooth, drop by teaspoon to a greased cookie sheet. Tessa uses one of those sprays. Bake for 8-10 minutes depending on your oven. Makes about 4 dozen.
So when you bite into the first cookie I want you to think about Captain Chase Hunter’s bottom lip. You’ll be signing up to become one of his agents in no time.

  1. Haha. Great post. The voice of the character is spot on. Well done and thanks for the cookie recipe! (I still haven't read your book but I will.) This makes me want to read it even more. I have so many books TBR from friends it's getting out of control. But that's a good thing for all of you.
