Black Roses & Speculative Fiction

The Skinny Author’s Book Review

The new Speculative Fiction Writers Website is an idea that has been in the back of Krista Lynn’s mind for several years. Together with five other authors, Linda Kane, Roh Morgon, Tierney James, and Cora Ramos, she developed a unique website that will be rolled out Friday, September 15th. It’s a brand-new promotion idea for the group – a writers’ cooperative of authors who write Speculative Fiction, which, for those who aren’t familiar with the term, consists of mysteries, supernatural tales, paranormal stories, alternate history, post-apocalyptic, Sci-Fi and fantasy.

The mission of the group, known as The Black Rose Authors, is to promote intriguing fiction. The website is a portal for writers and readers to find other authors, to engage new and current readers, and to locate resources that promote quality writing, successful publication, and promotion of Speculative Fiction. Eventually the project will utilize The Black Rose Press to buy stories. But for now, we are inviting authors to submit short stories and flash fiction for e-publication on our site.

We will be offering intensive social media outreach from our pool of social networks for authors who submit and contribute to the cooperative. Local authors and others can “get their name” out there by publishing on this innovative author cooperative.  https://www.speculativefictionwriters.com/

Love the supernatural, desert scenes, colorful, and descriptive. Characters are believable, entertaining, Nice mystery, just enough of a “love story” for my taste. Every scene is nicely woven together, a little mystery to draw us into the next chapter. It seems to end abruptly and leaving me with wanting the next book now!

Most recent review of Haiku Dance

“Beautifully done samurai romance set in Heian era Japan!
I don’t normally read romance, but am a voracious reader of Japanese history and historical fiction, so decided to give this a try. I am so glad I did! Truly a beautiful novel and a poignant love story. I also appreciated how well-researched the novel was, and particularly liked the depiction of early samurai culture and martial art training. I hope the author writes more novels set in early/feudal Japan!”

Blurb: Haiku Dance

Deep longing remains in Shino’s heart after being forced from his home as a child, and ripped from young Miyoshi. After many years of training and fighting as a samurai, he’s tired of the senseless battles fought for selfish lords. Thrust into the Emperor’s city of Heian Kyo, he finds Miyoshi again, now blossomed into the beautiful and charming Lady Lotus, courtier to the emperor’s court and soon to be betrothed to another. Using “special skills” his Master taught him, he risks everything to keep her from the fate to which she is destined but does not want and the dangers that threatens her life, but are they enough?

5.0 out of 5 starsMove Over Anne Rice

By Shannon Riley on January 18, 2012 Format: Paperback

MOVE OVER ANNE RICE
If you think there is nothing new, fresh and original in vampire fiction, you haven’t read Watcher: Book 1 of the Chosen, the debut novel by Roh Morgon. I am not particularly a fan of traditional vampire stories, but I found this incredible book more engrossing than anything I have read in the genre in years. The reasons are not only the suspenseful and well written tale, but its potent underlying themes.

Linda Lee Kane

Linda Kane takes her readers on an adventurous and chilling ride through the small town of Setauket, New York where four high school friends find themselves embroiled in a historical mystery more than a century old. Secret codes, murder, and lurking evil lead them to the point of almost no return. A page turner is just the beginning of a great series!

4.0 out of 5 starsGreat adventure story.

Chilled to the Bones is a teen/young adult book about Dealer, a girl who finds a trunk hidden away in the attic of her house. It contains a map, a locket, and letters relating to the American Revolutionary War. It seems one of her distant relations played a part in the war, and may be linked to the missing treasure. Some of the letters are in code, and a key is provided at the back of the book, so it’s very interactive! Dealer also finds a locket which seems to carry the spirit of the woman whose belongings are in the trunk.

This is a great adventure story, which as well as being a mystery also has supernatural elements, caves, hidden buildings, and treasure, as well as the code, so there’s a lot to keep young readers occupied. It’s based around the real life Culper Spy ring, so has its roots in history and there’s lots of historical detail and real life figures mentioned. It’s a very engaging read, with a gutsy heroine.  www.lindaleekane.com

Tierney James

Blurb: Dark Side of Morning

Dr. Cleopatra Sommers never came to terms with her father’s disappearance at the Museum of Natural History in Chicago. He had been a Native American scholar that explored avenues of unexplained spiritual paths in their cultures.  The museum had been her home and playground growing up when her father spent long hours working. She was always drawn to one display case holding a mannequin of a Pawnee Indian. There was no way she could know he watched her all those years until the night he crossed over to find her.  http://amzn.to/2ieQx6x

  1. I have to admit, I tended to shy away from subjects that didn’t sound interesting to me. But after reading a friend’s time travel romance and your Dark Side of Morning and The Devil’s Trill, I realized how much I limited myself. I try to read a variety of topics now. If I don’t like it, then I don’t finish it. But I find that’s not usually the case. Looking forward to these authors’ books.

  2. I am so happy you are trying these out. They are lots of fun and really gets the imagination pushed into high gear. Thanks for stopping by!

The Blog Categories are already filled with important information for writers, especially the Marketing Category that you are doing for us all.
