Where Writers Write #7 – Author Jami Gray

Meet Jami Gray, the coffee addicted, music junkie, Queen Nerd of her personal Geek Squad, Alpha Mom of the Fur Minxes, who writes to soothe the voices crammed in her head. You don’t want to miss out on her multiple series that combine magical intrigue and fearless romance into one wild ride — Arcane Transporter, Kyn Kronicles, PSY-IV Teams, or Fate’s Vultures.

I share an office with the hubster, but now that my kids are in college, our office is fairly quiet so I don’t have to run away to the coffee shop like I used to.  I use the headphones to drown out the hubby when he’s busy rampaging through magical villages and taking down evil monsters and wacked out wizards. I tend to do my writing in the evening because my day is taken up by my day job. If not for the job-that-pays-the-bills, I’d probably do my writing in the morning as I’m more awake then.

What kind of prep do you need to complete before starting to write?

Before I can sling my words onto the screen, I have to have my email cleaned out and any pending business off my desk or I turn into the dog from UP and ‘squirrel’. I make sure the clan understands that my time is off limits so they won’t interrupt unless the world is ending. It sucks to be in the middle of a scene, only to get dragged back to the real world with an impatient wail of “MOOOOMMMM”.

How long do you need to write each day to complete your novels?

I have a set word count that I have to hit so I can ensure I maintain my schedule of releasing 2-3 full length novels each year. It normally takes two to three hours a day to hit those. I do take Sundays off and leave one other day of the week open to handle the business end of writing things.

Is there something you add to your writing routine in order to create?

I used to listen to music when I wrote and had set playlists for each book. I still have set playlists, but most of the music is soundtracks versus vocals as I’ve found that it doesn’t take much before I’m singing along and my fingers are slowing down on the keyboard.

I share my workspace with my hubster but the ultimate dream is to have my own writing she shed. I inherited my father-in-law’s banker’s desk that I love. All that flat space! Sigh. I have two monitors because I’ve found I really need that, especially if I’m splitting my screen to refer back to previous scenes or in the midst of edits. However, it’s a dangerous power to have dual screens when you have to research something because it doesn’t take much to fall down a rabbit hole. I splurged on a gaming chair, mainly because I needed something with great back support. I don’t like to lay down in my chair, I do the sit-ruler-straight thing and the Secret Lab chairs are great for this. I also traded in my Apple keyboard for an Azio mechanical keyboard. I really like the traditional typewriter feel to the keyboard, probably because I’m that freakin’ old.

What genres to you prefer to write in?

My preferred genres are urban fantasy, paranormal romantic suspense, and romantic action-adventure, and I’m a series writer because once I’m in a world, I like to stay in it for a bit. I’ve been writing since I was in junior high, but I didn’t get published until I was in my thirties and was brave enough to put my stories out there.

Currently all my books are available in print and in ebooks via Kindle Unlimited and at Amazon. However, I have a fourth post-apocalyptic series that will be re-issued next year and be available everywhere. They’ll be joined by some of my other titles as I’ll be moving some of my titles out of Kindle Unlimited next year as well. The last book in my latest urban fantasy series, Arcane Transporter, LETHAL CONTENTS hit shelves in August 2021, in eBook, print and audio. Right now, the first two books (GRAVE CARGO, RISKY GOODS) are available in eBook, print, and audio.
