Mission to Save a Baby? Is that real?

I’m sure when you read China Dolls you’ll have some serious questions about what was real and what I made up. I have several pages dedicated to those questions at the end of the book. I thought I’d give you a little background ahead of time.

Adoption:

China stopped allowing foreign adoptions of its children in August 2024. The population growth shifted over the years, going from a fear of overpopulation to concerns about a growing aging demographic. The one-child policy was in place from 1979 to 2015. Adoption was an important part of solving what to do with the many abandoned children. Now the government has embraced larger families and offers tax deductions, maternity leave, and other benefits. The number of adoptions mentioned in the book may be higher than have been reported during those years.

Dragons:

The year of the dragon was celebrated in 2024. Who doesn’t like a good dragon story? I tried to use the symbolism of this mythical creature as a force for good in China Dolls. I liked him so much I may have to give him his own series. Why is the dragon important? Along with being a symbol of good luck and prosperity some people believe it brings much needed rain for successful agriculture. The dragon and its connection with water symbolizes great wealth. You’ll notice emblems in Chinese businesses and trade use the dragon.

Does the US have to protect Taiwan?

“The TRA (Taiwan Relations Act) requires the United States to provide Taiwan with defensive weapons to be able to resist forms of coercion that would jeopardize the security, social or economic system, of the people on Taiwan.” This does not make China happy and are constantly having military maneuvers off their shores to demonstrate a show of force.

Are missionaries allowed in China?

In this book we talk about Captain Hunter’s parents who were medical missionaries. I have known some medical missionaries who have worked in clinics there. While in Beijing, I was happy to see a Catholic church next to my hotel. I also got to visit a number of Buddhists temples. Missionaries were sent back to their home country as a result of COVID.  Although there are laws in China that make being a legal missionary difficult, it is not impossible. Public assembly requires a permit and is often denied. The Chinese Communist Party has a long history of restricting religious freedom. It continues to be hostile toward Islam, Tibetan Buddhism, and Christianity because the government believe the converts are under foreign influences.
