Author of Once Upon a Bookstore: A Tale Told Through the Lens of Time
Hello everyone! Today we’re going to take a deep dive on a new release coming out January 7, 2025. The author is Leslie Gullo. First let’s hear a little about her book. I know you’re going to love it.
Leslie take it away!
It was such a thrill to receive the proof of my debut novel! It’s been a dream for a long time. I’ve learned so much about myself and about the writing process. By far, my favorite part was the initial writing. Being surprised by the turn of events in my novel was mind blowing and I can’t wait to write more.
My second novel, And Then Again: Murder Told with an Artful Twist, is a murder mystery with romance and intrigue. I’m excited about its release in 2025. Stay tuned!

Once Upon a Bookstore is a romance novel filled with mystery and intrigue. The story opens as Melinda walks into a bookstore on a mission. She quickly learns that there is more to this bookstore than meets the eye. In the process, she meets Jake Samuels — a charming and irresistible bachelor who challenges her beliefs about love and independence. Melinda must make a heart-wrenching choice: cling to her solitary life or take a leap of faith and embrace the love she never thought possible.
Wow! Sounds like a great read. I can’t wait to to get my copy. Tell us a little about you.
My husband and I live in Texas with our beautiful Brittany Spaniel named Brittany. We have two daughters and four gorgeous grandchildren. They keep us busy and happy!
I discovered my love of writing on a long road trip in our RV. Now I am hooked and know that I will continue to write for as long as I can.
What is your genre, and why do you write these kinds of stories?
Leslie: I like to write romance novels filled with mystery and intrigue. My central characters face obstacles that ultimately define who they are and shine a light on what they want from their lives. My books are journeys of self-discovery, stories woven with adventure, love, and personal growth. They are also a bit like a fairy tale because they speak of a life that is enriched by a little magic. Why did I write this kind of story? Well—it seems it has been inside of me and now it’s on paper. How fun is that?
What is your favorite time of day to write and why?
Leslie: Oh, this is a tough one! I always like to write—day or night! I can write almost anywhere: a café, on my porch with a cup of coffee, or in bed at night when I can’t sleep. I love when I can pour myself into the characters and find out what happens next.
Who are your three favorite authors?
Leslie: Only three? EEK! I’ll try. Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, J. R. R. Tolkien. Oh, and J. K. Rowling. Fredrik Backman. Liane Moriarty. Hugh Howey. Nora Roberts. William Goldman. That’s nine, and I’m just getting started. Perhaps that’s why my debut novel, Once Upon a Bookstore, depicts the transformative power of placing the right book in the readers’ hands when they most need it.
What have you learned from being a writer?
Leslie: First, I’ve learned that writers are amazing people. And I didn’t expect that! There is no rat race in writer’s circles, just very kind and supportive people. You know who you are, and I love you!
Second, a story about ‘boy meets girl’, even if it’s a subplot, MUST have romantic tension. Thanks to those of you that forced me to accept that!
Finally, I’m tougher than I ever thought! When I started writing Once Upon a Bookstore, I wasn’t thinking about someday publishing it. As time went by, my dream of seeing it in the hands of strangers grew. With that dream comes unavoidable disappointment—and judgement. But guess what? I’m doing it, anyway. I’m nervous, but braced, so I’ll be fine. And I’m proud of myself for being brave in a way I’ve never done before.
Where do your stories come from?
Leslie: When I sit down to write, the words pour out of me. I quickly become obsessed with the characters and the situations they’re in. In Once Upon a Bookstore, for example, I can see elements of myself in many of my characters. And perhaps a handsome, charming, and slightly dorky physics professor might seem a lot like my husband.
What is the best part about being a writer?
Leslie: Oh! The best part?
The way my family and friends have encouraged and supported me as I began a new chapter of my life is incredible, and I’m grateful. Meeting new people who want to know everything about my writing journey and want to talk about theirs is inspiring. Seeing my book on Amazon is surreal—and wonderful!
The best part, though? I was amazed to see a story emerge that might entertain readers while presenting them with a little inspiration and a different way of approaching their challenges.
One thing’s for sure: my writing career is just getting started!
